As I sit here writing this post on December 31st, I look back at 2020 and sigh.
Like most of you, our plans at LARAMEE were botched by COVID19, economic shortcomings, personal surprises, and well... 2020 shenanigans.
But it's ok. Have faith. We will prevail.
So...we've restructured our plans and projects and expectations, and are now looking forward to a much better 2021!
The first announcement we have for you is that LARAMEE is launching a brand new approach to diversity in literature - and not just children's books!
While we work to bring you new books centering on cultural, racial, social diversity we want to start a deeper conversation about these themes, as well as introduce our followers and readers to new names in the literary and artistic community. We will chat with artists from the Latinx universe in America, but also with names that are starting out or already making waves in their home countries. There is much, oh so much to discover...and we want to do this with you!
For 2021 we are focusing on Brazilian authors, Brazilian poets, Brazilian artists...
As Brazilians, and parents of Brazilian-American children, in our home we've noticed a huge lack of books that present Brazilian culture, families, language, religion etc. We made our home in the US and our children are growing up proud Americans, but we don't want them to ignore the cultural heritage of their parents and grandparents.
And we are not alone.
We have countless friends who struggle with this, many come from dual-citizenship homes, many are married to either an American or another national, and deal with the hardship of introducing their children to the Portuguese language and to Brazilian culture in general.
We need to do better. We can do better.
At LARAMEE we even have the training to do better.
Our CEO...me...has a PhD in Latin American history, and a deep understanding of Brazilian history, culture, and trends. Why not make use of this advantage, right??
RIGHT.
So, for 2021 we're starting off with BRAZIL!!! If this turns out to be the hit we envision it to be, we can pick another Latin American country for 2022, and so on and so forth.
OH THE POSSIBILITIES!
Join us on this journey of discovery. Follow us, learn more about this country to the South of the US, a country that falls within the Latino category but is not hispanic. A country that, contrary to general belief, does NOT speak Spanish, and culturally presents its own unique elements from its unique colonial and modern histories.
You will learn a lot. You will have fun while at it too. And.. if you have children, you will be giving them the gift of knowledge, of expanding their horizons and visions to embrace a world that is out there, waiting to be discovered. Why not?
So, grab your (literary) passport and sign up for updates, this will be The Year of Brazil.
